Hedging Your Brain

This is an image taken from a typical PET acqu...

I often get this said to me “how do you know so much about everything!”. I am not trying to brag, it is really something people say. I get called a know-it-all…sometimes worse things as well. I do happen to know a lot of stuff, but lately with age I think I am starting to slip as far as retaining information.

I have always known how to bridge connections in my brain by using various techniques.

  • Creating songs or stories about the information
  • Total immersion into the topic
  • Visual cues for remembering

There are a lot of ways that you can help your brain retain information you find useful. However, what information you retain is important as well. In fact I would argue as we get older we need to bring down the amount of topics we seek to understand – basically we need to become masters of fewer and fewer bits of information.

As children we are huge sponges, soaking up information from everywhere. If taught at an early enough age, being multi-lingual is not that big of deal. Kids can become amazing learners very quickly if we give them the opportunity to.

Adults though, we have our attention pulled in a lot of different directions and the need for focus becomes paramount. So that is why I came up with a technique called Brain-Hedging.

Brain Hedging:

Hedging can mean various things. In finance hedging refers to offsetting your risk on one investment with another. In affect you are protecting yourself from an outside risk. In gardening you can create hedging by planting hedges around your yard creating a natural fence. That is the image I want you to stick with when it comes to Brain Hedging.

What's That Peeking Over the Hedge at Penshurs...

Brain Hedging is all about determining what you want entering into your brain for posterity and use. Do you really want to learn 4 different languages in your 30’s? Can you do that and still maintain the information you need for your career? Some people can, most can’t.

By determining exactly what you want to focus on and study, you can eliminate a lot of information that you don’t need your brain to hold on to. I mean really, do you still need the names of all the fraggle rock characters in there? Gobo Fraggle!

You can determine exactly what you want to focus on pretty easily by making a list of about 7 items that you really are passionate about or that you absolutely need to be sharp on for work. As a trainer/coach focusing on training would be a good thing, right? Focusing on accounting, while interesting, may not be the best course of action and it takes up needed brain resources.

So, I gave it a shot and these are the 7 focus topics I came up with for myself.

*in no particular order

  1. History
  2. Primal Diet/Fitness
  3. Religion
  4. Survival
  5. Spanish
  6. Training & Development
  7. OpenBSD

That was harder than I originally thought it would be, you see I am a generalist so I have a lot of interests. However, this exercise is all about focus. I want to break down each one of my topics to give you a better idea of what I was thinking with each one.

History:

To me history includes a few differing topics. Really you can’t study History without studying politics and economics as well. Also, you can’t study history without knowing the present. So keeping up to date on political events is part of focusing on history. I don’t need to be studying mandarin, but I could study the mandarins.

Primal Diet/Fitness:

I could have labeled this topics Health, but I wanted to narrow it even more to focus on the Primal diet. The primal diet can best be summed up in Mark Sisson’s book The Primal Blueprint. Basically going back to a diet that more closely represents what our Paleo-ancestors ate. Meat, Vegetables, Fruit, and Nuts. Pretty simple, I have seen a lot of people have great results with it. The fitness aspect of it intrigues me as well. I figure if I go full bore into this I will get some results and learn a lot about my physical self. Should be interesting.

Religion:

Religion is mainly focused on Christianity for me, but I study all religions as a course of habit. This will stretch my brain out of its normal logic based thinking. This topic also includes by default – philosophy. I spend a lot of time in this area of study, so controlling other sources of information is key to keeping my brain hedged enough for me to take in as much as possible.

Survival:

Guns, tents, water, foraging…these are all areas of study I think most of modern American has let slip and to the detriment of their overall life. If things do continue to get worse this information will keep me alive long enough to study the others.

Spanish:

Okay, I don’t need to explain this too much. I live in an area where learning Spanish and speaking it fluently would give me a big advantage in the workplace.

Training & Development:

To continue to get better at my career I need to get better at training and developing my clients/customers/co-workers. Learning to coach, motivate, and teach are my main focus points here. They will make me better, as well as those I am working with – as Michael Scott would say “A win-win-win”.

OpenBSD:

You will probably start seeing this leak onto combsy.com in the coming weeks. I have always wanted to know the ins & outs of OpenBSD. If you don’t know what it is go here. I am a total novice at this point, but I am learning very quickly. Very interesting topics…for geeks anway.

Review:

So there you have my 7 focus points. If you know me, you know I also enjoy sports and video games. I will still enjoy them, but gone are the days of memorizing stats or level maps. I just don’t have the capacity for it anymore. Brain Hedging is all about becoming  a Master of something, 7 things in this case, no mediocrity.

I will update you with this experiment as I get deeper into the process and technique. Any psychologist out there want to experiment? Just kidding…maybe…

Practice limiting the sources of information coming into your brain. Multi-tasking is dead. Focus and go full blast. In a later post I will start ranking each of my topics to show you how to focus even more. The idea is to become great at something for the benefit of others. Being a generalist can be good but often it leaves you out of doing some amazing things as well.

Paleo & Primal Diets

A Porterhouse steak on the grill

Instead of re-inventing the wheel for my Paleo diet post for my manifesto I went and got two videos that pretty much sum up the diet well and then give you some tips for keeping it. I still haven’t gone completely paleo/primal yet.

I just finished the Paleo Diet book recently and I am also reading The Primal Blueprint . After that I will probably go for a 30 day challenge. I am already losing weight just doing a pushup/squat workout on alternating days. Look for more on that, I was pretty shocked at the results in so little time. Well without further ado’ enjoy these two quick videos, they might just change your life.

  1. Stop & Count to 3
  2. Pray for 3 seconds
  3. Give someone a hug

I am not going to go into each one because they really explain themselves. I really think that if you can do at least one of these whatever you are going through will improve. It is all about putting things into perspective. Sure I am tired after a really long 50 hour week, but people in Haiti are suffering a lot more than me.

Even just 3 seconds can change your thoughts and put you in a different mood. Take some time and try it.

Focus

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 focus test

Focus: a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity.

I have come to the conclusion that this blog needs one focus. Sure I may write a post on Modern Warfare 2 every once in a while, but I want a succinct focus that I can put all my energy into.

So I started making list of things I might write about; whether  I was an expert or not. Here are some of the topics I came up with.

  1. History: Political history to be specific.
  2. Personal Finance
  3. The LA Dodgers (big fan)
  4. Parenting
  5. Music
  6. Technology
  7. Training & Development

You see I have a pretty varied list, I even at one point thought I would just do book reviews. I still plan on doing that, I will probably just create a page on this blog that gathers all of my amazon reviews in one area. Stay tuned.

After looking at the list I broke it down into topics that I actually have experience with.

  1. Personal Finance
  2. Parenting
  3. Training & Development

Then I broke down this to the one I thing I actually have professional experience in.

  1. Training & Development

I have been in this field for about 6 years now between 3 different employers. Spanning 3 different types of training as well.

  1. Retail Training
  2. Customer Service Training
  3. Sales Training

I feel I have a certain expertise in the training field. I have trained basic sales principles as well as technical information to non-technical people. I really have run the gauntlet and still have many years to go to learn and grow.

My passion really is developing people into the best person they can be. Whether they are a customers service representative or a sales person going door to door. I want to help them develop their strengths and recognize their weaknesses. I think I have a lot to say about this topic. So, that is my topic.

What kind of posts will you see in the next few months?

  • Principles of Good Power-Point
  • Follow up: The Great Trainers Secret
  • Structure of a Training Program
  • How to Deal with Uninterested Students
  • ROI: How to Sell Training to Your Boss
  • Tips for Filming your Trainings
  • Pictures or Words: Advanced Power-Point Tips
  • Selling your Training: When Sales people blow you off.
  • Unconventional Training Methods
  • Training & Development Book Reviews
  • Reviews of Presentations (Like Ted Talks)

You can see that I have quite a lot of content to create for this endeavor. The great thing is that it relates to my current position at work, which will make me better and worth more to the company. That is really what this is all about. Find your passion or at least something you are good at and focus on it. Drive your energy, passion, and time into it and become great.

10 things I learned about business by playing Modern Warfare 2

darthcombsy

  1. Go Slow: Coming around a corner fast is a good way to get killed in MW2. Shipping out a product or releasing a sale without first making sure you are good to go is also a good way to get killed in business. In MW2 it pays to go slow, take your time and your aim is going to better. Slow isn’t a bad thing, in the military they say “Slow is smooth”. True for both MW2 and business!
  2. Use Perks: In MW2 as you level in multi-player you get access to new perks. Perks are advantages that you can use to give you an advantage over your competitor. You can get the bling perk and add two attachments to your gun instead of 1 at a time. This really gives you the upper hand. For business you can do the same. Look for advantages that give you the edge verses your competitor. Is your product cheaper? Better quality? Are you better? Use those perks and take it to them.
  3. Use the right tools: Nothing is worse then running around with a sniper rifle on a small map. It is completely the wrong tool for the job. Now you can always get a perk that lets you change weapons mid-game in MW2 but for most of us that is not an option. Make sure you have the right tools in business. Going to a VC meeting with a sub-par presentation? Same thing as bringing a knife to a gunfight. Use the right tool!
  4. Teamwork is key: In MW2 there are some loners that are extremely good. They are usually lonely in real life as well! However, for most of us to do really good in MW2 multi-player you need to use team work. Talking about where enemies are, letting your team know if you throw a grenade, ect. Without communication and each person filling their role to the fullest, you are going to fail, hard. In business, most of us work in teams now. Respect it and you will succeed. Try to go lone wolf, you might get out ahead at first, but eventually you are going to get sniped.
  5. Competitors will cheat: There is a glitch in the game right now that will create a massive explosion if you are killed with the javelin missile equipped. It is massively cheap! Nothing is worse than popping a guy from 30ft away and then getting blown away in the process. I hate it! (seriously) Fortunately the game makers are going to fix it come this next update, but we don’t always get an update in real life to prevent our competitors from cheating. Your competition, whether external or internal, is going to cheat one day. They are going to lie, or steal, or whatever…they will do it. You have decide whether you go with them and hopefully don’t get caught, or take the high road. Part of me wants to use that glitch, looks like fun. The other part of me realized how angry I was when I was taking the high road. Take the high road, they still get blown up eventually.
  6. Intel is key: UAV, Heartbeat sensors, knowing the map, these are all things that help you achieve success in MW2. Things like industry reports, customer surveys, and studying your company are also things that will help you achieve success in business. Use them as often as possible. Knowing is half the battle! (thanks G.I. Joe!)
  7. Know your environment: The last thing you want to do is run around with a bright red gun in a snow storm. You have the option in MW2, but I don’t advise it. The better idea is to use the arctic camouflage in the snow, makes sense right? Know your business environment! If it is a laid back environment where it is okay to wear khakis and polo shirts to a meeting, or jean skirts if you will, then do that. However, if you are expected to wear a suit and you show up in shorts…get the picture?
  8. Quality over Quantity: Anybody can spray and pray in MW2. You see it all the time. The guy who gets the machine gun and goes crazy. I find that if you take your time (#1) and use short bursts of fire with your weapon, you are going to be on top of the leader-board at the end of the game. Those hits are going to be quality and take down your target, the other way may get you a lot of assists, but you aren’t going to kill many people. Same thing is business, look for 5 -10 quality clients a month rather than 100 maybe clients. The secret that many top guys know in the sales world is that it is better to have 1 client who loves you than 100 clients who could care less. Take your time and give them quality head-shots…wait..crossed over there.
  9. Learn from others: The players in MW2 that get 25 kills in a row and then drop a tactical nuke to end the game are the guys I want to be like. I take my time during a match anytime I get killed by them. MW2 lets you watch the kill cam (in most games) that shows you how you got killed. Learn from that! Same thing in business, find out how the company or sales person that beat you does their job. Chances are you are going to learn a lot and get better for it.
  10. Go after challenges: In the multi-player game the fastest way to level is by completing challenges. Get 150 head-shots with this gun, get 15 knife kills here, shoot down 10 helicopters, ect. You are going to get a lot more points by going after those than by just killing people. Same in business (not the killing part), set challenges for yourself. Know what you are going after and you are going to be better off. I don’t have to point to all the studies showing that setting goals is what the most successful people do, you know that already! Just do it. (thanks Nike)

So I hope these tips will help you in business & Modern Warfare 2, that is what I am hoping anyway. Leave any comments about tips you have for either topic in the comment section or shoot me an email at mike@combsy.com

Thanks and keep shooting, you’ll hit something eventually.

Walk or Run Everyday

Running With Scissors, Inc

Image via Wikipedia

30 minutes of walking or running a day can do a lot of good to your health, both physically and mentally. I plan on starting to walk or run every morning with my pup, Tucker. Well he is a pup, 2 years old in January, but he weighs 95 pounds.

I digress.

Some Information:

An eight-year study of 13,000 people found that those who walked 30 minutes a day had a significantly lower risk of premature death than those who rarely exercised. In addition, research has shown that regular walking can decrease total and intra-abdominal fat and reduce your risk of developing diabetes or breast cancer.

A regular walking program can also:

  • • Improve your cholesterol profile
  • • Lower blood pressure
  • • Increase your energy and stamina
  • • Boost “couch potato” bone strength
  • • Prevent weight gain

Source: http://www.acefitness.org

30 minutes a day of walking can do all that above, amazing right? Not to mention the mental benefits.

  • work out your problems
  • talk with your spouse
  • talk to your kids
  • play fetch with your dog
  • listen to an educational podcast
  • learn a new language

The possibilities are really endless for what you can do while you are walking. If you are complaining already about not having time. See my post on waking up at 4:30 am.

You are going to be able to work through problems, connect with your loved ones, and maybe get some quiet time in. All while lowering your blood pressure.

Score!

No Soda

2005 Jones Soda Holiday Pack
Image by The Rocketeer via Flickr

Bubbles, sugar, color…yum! Soda. Pop. Coke. Whatever you call it, usually depends on what part of the country you are from, I love the stuff. However, my waistline is starting to like it a bit too much. Not to mention all the other wonderful things that soda can do to your body.

My throat starts to hurt after a few pops, and I actually get sores in my mouth if I have more than 3 cans of mt. dew in a day. Really it is not fun. Sure a soda every once in a while isn’t that bad, moderation right? I love that philosophy, but for me it tends to be either no soda or tons of it. So I have to choose.

I found this cool explanation of what soda does to your body over the space of an hour, pretty amazing really.

Lets take a look:

  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • >60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.
  • Source
  • So lets see, your brain gets affected like heroine is in it, it makes you pee, all minerals and such leave your body, and then you crash. Wow…that soda still sound good?

Every one of us know that soda is not good for us, but we drink it anyway. The Europeans drink wine with every meal, we drink soda, big deal right? I am being sarcastic here but I really think we have an issue. Just check this statistic out.

“Liquid candy” to detractors, sweetened soft drinks are so ubiquitous that they contribute about 10 percent of the calories in the American diet, according to government data. Source

10 percent of our calories, that is just insane. I think that I probably have about 20% of my calories are in soda…maybe 30. Not Good.

Well I hope I have changed your viewpoint on soda a little bit,  I am committing to at least reducing my soda intake to 1 a week…maybe 2 if it is a root beer.

5 Tips to reducing your liquid candy intake:

    1. Drink Water
    2. Drink Diet Soda: if you have to…
    3. Add lemon to your water for a flavor kick
    4. Choose Soda that uses cane sugar instead of HFCS
    5. Drink Tea!

    4:30 AM

    Sun Rise at Yushan.
    Image via Wikipedia

    4:30 Am.

It is early. Really early. So early that the when the sun comes up it is startled that you are their waiting for it.

    I love that feeling.

I love the quiet in the morning that comes from the rest of the world being asleep.

Rising early is a big deal in the personal development crowd. It is one of those Holy Grail items that we all seek in our journey to get better.

It is not a new idea though, the idea that it was beneficial to get up early has been around for a long time. Even God likes us to wake up early “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me” Proverbs 8:17. Here are some more thoughts on rising early:

    I rise with the lark.
    - Anonymous

The famous Apollonius being very early at Vespasian’s gate, and finding him stirring, from thence conjectured that he was worthy to govern an empire, and said to his companion, “This man surely will be emperor; he is so early.”
    - Nicolas Caussin

Thus we improve the pleasures of the day,
While tasteless mortals sleep their time away.
    - Mrs. Susannah Centlivre

I would have inscribed on the curtains of your bed, and the walls of your chamber: “If you do not rise early, you can make progress in nothing.”
    - 1st Earl of Chatham, William Pitt

Six, or at most seven, hours’ sleep is, for a constancy, as much as you or anybody else can want; more is only laziness and dozing, and is, I am persuaded, both unwholesome and stupefying.
    - 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope

Next to temperance, a quiet conscience, a cheerful mind and active habits, I place early rising as a means of health and happiness.
    - Timothy Flint

The early morning has gold in its mouth.
    - Benjamin Franklin

When you find an unwillingness to rise early in the morning, endeavor to rouse your faculties, and act up to your kind, and consider that you have to do the business of a man; and that action is both beneficial and the end of your being.
    - Marcus Aurelius (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus)

Whoever has tasted the breath of morning knows that the most invigorating and most delightful hours of then day are commonly spent in bed; though it is the evident intention of nature that we should enjoy and profit by them.
    - Robert Southey

    Health:

I have found that for me rising early is truly the good for my day and mood. Even if the amount of sleep I get isn’t that much, say 4-5 hours I still feel better if I wake up around 4:30. I am not sure why this could be. However, I think it might have to do with REM sleep.

I am pretty sure that I go through the 5 sleep stages very quickly. I am a light sleeper so I think I naturally go through the sleep stages much faster than normal. Really the only way to find out would be to go through a sleep study, definitely on my to do list. I see it as a way for my brain and body to get the sleep it needs by adapting to get into deep sleep and REM faster.

Infants get the most REM sleep and it decreases over time, but I have heard of ways to train your body to go into REM very quickly. Take for instance www.stevepavlina.com’s experiment with polyphasic sleep. He was taking short naps throughout the day of about 30 minutes in length and getting all the rest he needed. The whole study he did was quite fascinating, worth a read by the way.

Rising early for me puts me in a more natural sleep cycle. I get tired around 9:00-9:30 and can fall asleep by 10. There really is nothing worth doing past 10 (on a regular basis anyway). Anything you do is either rotting your brain or getting you in trouble…trust me.

A great thing about getting up early for your health is that you can finally fit in that exercise time. I like to walk my dog, he loves it even more than I do. 30 minutes of walking a day is great for you, there are a ton of studies out there that show 30 minutes of exercise can do wonders for just about everything.

    Wealth:

If you were giving an extra hour in the morning to completely focus on how your day was going to go, do you think you could be more productive? Do you think you could make more money? I know you can.

Spending an hour to focus your day makes it almost impossible for it to come off track. That extra hour is going to give you the time you need to plan your day around your Most Important Tasks and then move forward.

If you are like me you spend at least an hour every morning reading your rss feed or emails. That alone would give you the extra time you need to get rid of the junk at the beginning of the day. That way you don’t have to give up your guilty pleasure of following every tea pot collector blog on the internet…oops.

You also are going to be seen as a go-getter. Especially in the business world, those that come early or stay late are prized. You don’t have to do both, and you shouldn’t, but one of them is key to rise up in the business world. (no pun intended)

Let me just make sure you know that rising the corporate ladder isn’t all that it is cracked up to be, but it is fun to achieve success…moderation is key.

    Benjamin Franklin
    Image via Wikipedia

    Wisdom:

Early to bed and early to rise, Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. – Benjamin Franklin
We talked about health, wealth, and now we move on to wisdom. Ben was right though, you can get a lot of studying done early in the morning.
For me I read my daily Bible reading and then move on to whatever book I am reading this week. I can read a lot this way. If you spend an hour in the morning reading, you can get about 50-70 pages of reading done during this time. Think about how many books that is every couple of days. Most business books are around 200-300 pages…so around every three days you could read a book. You see how awesome it is to harness your time?
Referring to the walk you had because you are up early now, use your iphone, ipod, or zune and listen to some podcasts. Learn Spanish, Chinese, listen to a MIT lecture, whatever is your passion listen to it. I have a ton of business/sales/writing podcasts that I follow religiously. It is amazing what you can pick up in that 30 minutes of walking or running.
You really can pick up a ton of knowledge during this quite time in the morning. Here is an example of what you could do:
    4:30 – 5:30 Read non-fiction
5:30 – 6:00 Go on a walk (listen to “Learn Spanish” podcast)
    6:00-6:30 Meditation/Prayer time
    6:30-7:00 Eat/Shower
    7:00-7:45 Plan your day
Look how much you have done right there, all before most people have even gotten up. Can you see how this could really effect your life? Just by getting up early and going to bed at a reasonable time you can really get some stuff done for yourself and those who come in contact with you.
I mean who wouldn’t find someone who has put this amount of focus into their day fun to talk to? Right? So give yourself a 30 day challenge and see how getting up early changes your life.
Can’t do 4:30? Try working backwards from your normal rising time 30 minutes every week until you get there.
